Zaha Hadid’s building at the London 2012 Olympic Park is more than simply an aquatic center: it will factor largely into the public experience of the Olympic Games.

Hadid's London Aquatics Centre will be the venue for Swimming, Diving, Synchronized Swimming, Paralympic Swimming, and the aquatic portion of the Modern Pentathlon. It is scheduled to host 192 events in all.

The central undulating portion of the aquatic center is a permanent structure. It is 160 m long and 90 m at its widest point and is composed of a steel truss frame that weighs over 3,000 tons. The structure was assembled and then lifted into place to rest upon three concrete supports. Installation of the aluminum exterior cladding and a timber ceiling occurred after the steel structure was set in place. Two temporary wing extensions with additional seating will remain attached to the structure during the Olympic Games. Eventually, the Aquatics Centre will serve as a facility for the local community, including schools and clubs, but it will remain possible to increase its capacity by adding seating extensions during major swimming competitions.
